Melt Spinning
Polymer is melted and forced through a spinneret. Then cool air solidifies the melted polymer into filaments.
(Melt-Spun fibers include: nylon, olefin, polyester, saran, and glass) |
Dry Spinning
Polymer is dissolved in a solvent & then extruded into an atmosphere of warm, dry air. Warm air then evaporates the solvent and hardens the filaments. (Acetate, some acrylics, modacrylic, spandex, and vinyon)
Wet Spinning
Involves dissolving the polymer in a chemical bath and then extruding it into another chemical bath that hardens the polymers into filaments
Dry-jet wet spinning
variation of wet spinning. when the fiber is extruded it passed through a small space of air b4 it is immersed in the chemical bath.
Solvent spinning
newest process. Polymer is dissolved in amine oxide, then extruded into a solvent bath. Solvent can be recovered and recycled
