What is a forest?

Land with tree cover of more than 10% and an area of more than 0.5 ha. Trees should be able to grow to 5m at maturity.

Why don't forests grow everywhere?

  • Global Atmospheric Circulation
  • Species with similar ecological tolerances, structure and functional characteristics.
  • Biomes - Robert Whittaker's classification of biomes.

What do forests need to grow?

  • Climate
  • Soil
  • Biodiversity
  • Time

What do plants need to grow?

  • Carbon dioxide
  • Light
  • Water
  • Nutrients

What are the major biogeochemical cycles?

  • Carbon cycle
  • Hydrological cycle
  • Nitrogen cycle

How do the major biogeochemical cycles relate to forestry?

  • Forests are carbon sinks and hold onto atmospheric carbon, and then release it when they are harvested or in forest fires.
  • Forests need water to grow and absorb it.
  • Forests need nitrogen to grow and absorb it through there roots.

What is primary growth?

Primary growth extends the length of plant above and below ground and comes from the apical meristem.

What is secondary growth?

Secondary growth refers to the lateral growth or width of the plant from the lateral meristems.

What types of competition do trees face?

  • Physical and chemical i.e water and nutrients and light.
  • Predation, parasitism, symbiosis.

What are the 4 categories of ecosystem services? and give examples.

  • Supporting - nutrient cycling, soil formation.
  • Provisioning - food, fresh water, wood and fibre, fuel.
  • Regulating - climate, disease, water purification.
  • Cultural - aesthetic, spiritual, educational, recreational.
