Osteons

Structures in bones that carry the blood supply

Femur

Thigh bone - largest bone in the body; extending from the hip to the knee

Tibia

Long bone found in the leg, extending from the knee to the ankle

Humerus

Long bone found in the arm extending from the shoulder to the elbow

Radius

Long bone found in the arm extending from the elbow to the wrist

Os Pubis

Area on the anterior side of the pelvis where the hip bones come together

Ventral Arc

A bony ridge that is formed on the ventral (lower) side of the female os pubis

Epihyses

Growth plates found at the end of long bones; form in adolescence and fuse to the bone in early adulthood

Diaphysis

The shaft of a long bone

Clavicle

Also known as the collar bone; its medial ends meet in the center of the body

Suture

Immovable joints where bones are joined together

Symphysis

A place where two bones meet and may rub together.

Mongoloid

Descriptor for people of Asian, Native American and Polynesian descent.

Negroid

Descriptor for people of African, Aborigine, and Melanesian descent.

Caucasoid

Descriptor for people of European, Middle Eastern, and East Indian descent.

Blunt Force Trauma

Made by a wide instrument or a round surface;


eg. being hit by a car or a bat

Projectile Trauma

Exhibits complete displacement of bone with radiating fractures outward from this displaced bone


eg. gun or crossbow

Sharp Force Trauma

Force applied over a narrow focus; ax, ice pick or spear

Strangulation

Results in a broken Hyoid bone (except with children under 20)

Hyoid Bone

Horse shoe shaped bone composed of smaller bones with fuse in adulthood; found in the neck

Compression

Pushing force (opposite of tension) at 90 degress from the surface of the bone.

Shearing

Pushing on a bone at smaller angle than 90 degrees - almost across the bone

Bending

A force that impacts a bone at a right angle to the bone where part of the bone can move and bend

Torsion

One end of the bone is stationary the other end is twisting around the long axis of the bone.

Tension

Pulling on opposite ends of the bone in opposite direction.
