What is velocity?

Speed in a straight line.

What is the formula for speed?

Speed = distance / time

In a distance time graph, the steeper the gradient the....

the faster the speed

What is the formula for acceleration?

Acceleration = change in velocity / time interval

What is the formula for change in velocity?

Change in velocity = final velocity - initial velocity

What is the formula for force?

Force= mass x acceleration

What is the formula for weight?

Weight = mass x acceleration due to gravity

What is meant by the term drag coefficient?

How easily an object moves through air/ streamline

What is terminal velocity?

Drag force (air resistance) = weight force

Acceleration = 0

Cannot increase in speed anymore

Forces are balanced

What is meant by the terms:

-stopping distance

-thinking distance

-breaking distance

-the thinking and breaking distance added together

-the distance travelled whilst the driver is reacting

-the distance travelled from when the brakes are first applied to when the car stops

What is the formula for calculating a moment?

Moment of force= forced applied x distance from pivot

How do you find the centre of gravity?

Choose a pivot around the outside of a shape a create a plumb line from it. Repeat this for another point. Where the plumb lines meet is the centre of gravity.

Explain Hooke's law.

Some materials can be temporarily stretched and so can temporarily change shape.

The relationship between the force applied to a spring is proportionate to the extension of the spring.

The elastic limit is the limit whereby after a certain force is applied the spring cannot go back to its original shape.

What is the equation for a moment?

Moment = force x distance from pivot

When is an object balanced?

When the total clockwise moment equals the total anticlockwise moment.

force x distance = force x distance

A plank of wood is 400m long. A man- weight 200N- stands in the middle. The plank of wood is held up by two supports. What is the reaction force of each of the two supports?

What happens if the man moves so he is 100m from one end, and therefore 300m from the other?

200N on each support

150N on the closest support, 50N on the other
