Energy

The ability to do work.

Potential Energy - Stored Energy at rest

Kinetic Energy - Energy in Motion

Work

The force used to move something

Force

A push or pull that causes an object to move, stop or change speed or direction.

The greater the push or pull, the greater the change in motion.

Inertia

The tendency of a still object to remain still (or at rest) and a moving object to remain in motion

Weight

The measure of the force of gravity on an object

Mass

The amount of matter in an object

Objects with more mass are heavier than objects with less mass

Position

The location of an object compared to surrounding objects (behind, below, left, right, ahead, above)

Motion

Changing position of an object caused by force

Objects in motion may speed up, slow down or change position

Speed

How fast an object moves

How fast an object moves or the distance an object moves in certain amount of time depends on the force acted upon it

Friction

The force that works against motion between surfaces of objects that are touching

Friction

May cause the object to slow down or stop

Friction creates heat

A moving object continues to move unless there is friction

The smoother the surface, the less friction it has

Gravity

The force that pulls objects towards one another

Potential Energy

energy at rest

an object at rest that is about to move

Ex - a bird sitting on a wire, throwing a ball up in the air, person sitting completely still (sleeping)

Kinetic Energy

energy of motion

Ex - ball falling in the air, yo-yo spinnning, rushing water, writing these notes
