Footrot pathogens
Fusobacterium necrophorium - Gram negative
Baceteroides melanogenicus - Gram positive

Obligate anaerobes
Normal GI flora
Footrot clinical signs
all ages
may be sudden
usually one limb
swelling, redness and pain in interdigital area
skin fissures into subcutaneous tissue
necrotic tissue around edges of lesion
Footrot pathogenesis
F. necrophorum rpoduces a leukotoxin that protects both agents form phagocytosis and is responsible for necrosis

B. malnogenicus (P. levi) produces proteolytic and collagenolytic enzymes that attack the subcutaneous tissues - and spreads disease
Footrot TX
Oxytetracycline - 28 withdrawl time
Ceftiofur - good for dairy cattle - short withdrawl time
PPG - LONG withdrawl time but good for anaerobes, give every day.
Footrot Prevention
Management, Foot baths,
Vaccinate? Trace mineral supplements
Interdigital dermatitis
Acute to chronic inflammation of interdigital skin.
Does NOT extend into subQ tissues.
Results in heel horn erosion and undermining of the heel bulbs
Interdigital dermatitis - Bovine contagious interdigital dermatitis pathogen
Dechelobacter nodosus + others
Difference between Footrot and interdigital dermatitis
Footroot from ubiquitous pathogen that gains entry due to trauma. Has necrosis
Interdigital dermatitis is contagious with no necrosis.
Interdigital dermatitis TX
Terramycin in medicated feeds
Footbaths
Systemic AB not as beneficial unless spread to deeper tissues.
Contagious footrot in sheep
interdigital dermatitis with extension into adjacent epidermal tissue underlying the hard horn
Contagious footrot in sheep pathogens
Dichelobacter nodosus - infected sheep are only source
Fusobacterium necrophorum -
Actinomyces pyogenes - produces a factor that stimulates growth of F. necrophorum
Contagious footrot in sheep TX
Carrier sheep + warm environment + abundant moisture = spread of disease through flock.
Contagious footrot in sheep tx
Radical hoof trimming
Foot baths - ZnSO4
ABX - PPG, Oxytet
Cull - infecting everyone else
Papillomatous digital dermatitis - hairy heel warts
transmissible dermatitis on the plantar/palmar surface of the pastern and on the heels. Complete erosion of the peidermis that is replaced by granulation tissue.
papillomatous digital dermatitis etiology
spirochete - treponema
Zn - deficiency
PDD Clinical signs
painful to touch
lame
ulceration around the ocronary band in the bulb area
Washcloth like in texture
PPD TX
Ceftiofur crystalline free acid - excede
tulathromycin - draxxin both resolve lameness in about 10 - 14 days.
PPG and Oxytet not effective
