Nutrients

The substances in food that provide the raw materials and energy that the body needs to carry out all of its essential processes.

Proteins

Nutrients that contain nitrogen as well as carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Proteins are needed for tissie frowth and repair, and play a big role in the chemical reactions with cells.

Vitamin

Vitamins act as the helper molecules in a variety of chemical reactions within the body.

Mineral

Nutrients that are not made by living things

A diagram that was developed to help people maintain a healthy diet. It is split into 6 different food groups, and indicates how many servings from each group should be eaten every day to maintain a healthy diet.

Percent Daily Value

Shows you how the nutritional content of one serving fits into the recommended diet for a person who consumes 2,000 Calories a day.



Digestion

The process by which your body breaks down food into small nutrient molecules.

Absorption

The process by which nutrient molecules pass through the wall of your digestive system into your blood

Saliva

The fluid that is released when your mouth waters

Esophagus

A muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach.

Peristalsis

The involuntary waves of muscle contraction during digestion

Stomach

A j-shaped, muscular pouch located in the abdomen. Most mechanical digestion and some chemical digestion takes place in the stomach

Small Intestine

The part of the digestive system where most chemical digestion takes place, and stretches out to about 6 meters

Bile

A substance produced in the liver that breaks up fat particles

Villus

Cover the inside of the small intestine, and absorb nutrient molecules.

Large Intestine

Last section of the digestive system, and is about 1.5 meters long.

Rectum

Where waste is compressed into solid form.

Anus

A muscular opening at the end of the rectum, and where waste is eliminated from the body.
