Inability to metabolise lactose, because of a lack of the required enzyme lactase in the digestive system
|
Alactasia/lactose intolerance

What are the two methods for measuring urine/plasma glucose
HINT: One is enzymatic and the other is not |
1. Reduction of alkaline copper reagent (will detect any reducing compound present)
2. Reaction with glucose oxidase (specific for glucose) --> The enzyme produces hydrogen peroxide, which oxidises a colourless dyestuff to give a blue colour |
|
What is 'pentosuria'?
HINT: Look at the break down of the word |
Excretion of 5-carbon sugars in the urine, most of these are reducing sugars
IMPORTANT as test for diabetes requires oxidation of a colourless dyestuff. However, if VitC/reducing substances are present, the glucose oxidase test will not be positive |
|
If you see a question in a paper talking about a patient who presents with a history of abdominal discomfort and diarrhoea, you should suspect...
|
Lactose intolerance/alactasia (due to increasing age)
