What are the five purposes of close order drill?
Enables Commander to:
1. Move his unit in a standard, orderly manner, while maintaing best appearance possible.
2. Provide simple formations from which combat formations can be readily assumed.
3. Teach discipline, habits of precision and automatic response to orders.
4. Increase confidence in jr. officers and NCO through command.
5. Give Marines opportunity to hand individual weapons.
What is an element?
Individual, squad, section, platoon, company or other unit which is part of a larger unit.
What is a formation?
Arrangement of elements on line, in column, or any other prescribed manner.
What is a line?
Elements are abreast, exception that a section or platoon is in line its squads are in line behind one another.
What is a rank?
Line of marines/vehicles placed side by side.
What is a column?
-Elements placed one behind the other.
-Exception is a platoon, when lines are column and abreast of each other.
What is a file?
A single column of Marines/vehicles one behind the other.
What is a flank?
-Right or left extremity of a unit either on line or in column.
-Element on extreme left/right of a line.
-A direction at a right angle to the direction an element of a formation is facing.
What is an interval?
-Lateral space between elements on the same line.
-Measured between shoulder to shoulder.
-Measure between elements, and formations flank to flank.
-Unit CO's are not considered in the measuring.
Normal interval?
-One arms length.
Close Interval
Horizontal distance between shoulder and elbow when left hand is placed on the hip.
Alignment
Dressing of several elements on a straight line.
Guide
-Base, upon whom a formation, elements, thereof regulates march.
-Regulate the interval, direction, alignment and cadence on a base file.
Center
-Middle element of an odd number formation.
-Left center is enter if the number is even.
-Remember guide will be included in the count.

-Length of a step

-Indicates movement to be executed.

-Indicates when to execute the command.

In a CG of 4 men who are the color bearers?

Guests are usually what? At a wet down?

What is a Hail and Farewell?
-Introduces SNCO's and spouses who have arrived since last Hail and Farewell.
-Also says goodbye to SNCO's who are leaving before next H&F.
-Can be done monthly, quarterly, or on a case by case basis.
-Done usually at the SNCO club.
What transpires during the Hail?
Brief introduction with comments on where they're coming from and where they will be working.
What transpires during the farewell?
-Longer than hail.
-Where SNCO is going.
-Current section
-Presented plaque's/mementos
-If lunch is eaten, he selects his meal and tab is picked up.
-Gives a speech
-People may give comments about the exodus.
When did the first Staff Sergeants receive their warrants?
Spring of 1923.
In what order are awards, promotions, and re-enlistments given?
-Awards, Medal, CERTCOM, Meritorious Mast, Letter of Appreciation, etc.

State Promotion guidelines:
-Recognized are formed up one rank behind formation.
-Formation presented to commander by senior enlisted.
-Commander says, POST
-Senior enlisted marches in direct route to left of commander.
-Senior enlisted then commands: PERSONNEL TO RECEIVE AWARDS, PROMOTIONS, etc, CENTER (Marines execute a right face) MARCH!
-Marines march in front of the formation approximately 5 paces in front and centered on the commander.
-Senior enlisted commands: MARK TIME MARCH, DETAIL HALT. RIGHT FACE, HAND SALUTE, READY TWO.
-Designated marine reads orders/citations.
-Senior officer, accompanied by designated staff personnel, advances to recognize.
-Hand/attach award.
-Shake hands
-Person receiving award will salute the officer.
-HAND SALUTE, READY TWO, LEFT FACE, FORWARD MARCH.
-Detail marches in most direct route to rear of formation.
What is a Dining In held for?
CO may hold to welcome a new member or bid farewell.
What's the difference between a Dining-In and a Mess night?
Mess nights are stag affairs, military command only.
In terms of formality, describe a Dining-In:
-Bare shoulders for ladies is not appropriate.
-Do not place lady at the end of the table.
-Flowers may be ordered for each of the ladies.
-After dinner speeches should be of interest to both Marines and their spouses.
Who organizes the Marine Corps Birthday?
A general officer, except when not available.
In terms of ceremony, describe:
-Rehearsals are conducted to ensure smooth run.
-Escorts will be formed of appropriate ranks present.
-When conducted at NCO or other enlisted messes, appropriate ranking NCO's will present and form escort.
When applicable who forms the escort?
Two officers, or enlisted personnel, or each rank.
What uniform will be worn, when practical?
Evening blue or dress blues.
Where is the birthday cake mounted and in what colors?
-Mess cart
-Scarlet and Gold bunting.
If swords are not available what is done on appropriate commands?
