What are fluoroquinolones?
Fluoroquinolones are bactericidal as a result of inhibition of the enzyme necessary for DNA replication
What are some examples of fluoroquinolones?
-Ciprofolaxacin (Cipro)

-Lomefloxacin (Maxaquin)
What are fluoroquinolones used to treat?
-Can treat a wide variety of micro-organisms such as aerobic gram-negative bacteria
-Can be an alternative to parenteral antibiotics for clients with severe infections
-UTI
-Lower respiratory infections

-GI infections
-Medication of choice for clients who have inhaled anthrax spore
What are some possible adverse reactions to fluoroquinolones?
-Gi discomfort (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea - suggest to clients to take medication with food)
-Achilles tendon rupture (pain, swelling, redness at Achilles tendon site)
-Suprainfection (thrush, vaginal yeast infection)
-Phototoxicity (burning skin, erythema, blisters)
What are contraindications for fluoroquinolones?
-Ciprofloxacin should not be administered to children younger than 18 years of age due to rupture of the Achilles tendon
-Dosage should be decreased in ciprofloxacin in clients who have renal dysfunction
