body axes
A coordinate system fixed to the airplane. The origin is
at the center of gravity; the xb axis is in the airplane plane of symmetry
and points out the nose of the airplane; the zb axis is in the plane of
symmetry and points downward; and the yb axis is perpendicular to the
xb and zb axes and points out the right wing.
Pitch axis
The yb axis.
Static stability
If an airplane is disturbed from steady flight, static
stability is the tendency of the airplane to automatically generate forces
and moments which reduce the disturbance.
Longitudinal stability
Stability about the yb axis.
Pitch rate
The angular velocity about the yb axis.
pitch moment
the moment about the yb axis
turbojet
an axial flow engine which contains a diffuser, compressor, combustion chamber, turbine, and nozzle. It produces thrust by increasing the velocity and pressure of the flow through the engine
turbofan
A turbofan is a turbojet engine which has a fan after the
diffuser. The fan puts additional air around the turbojet
6 DOF equations of motion
the translational (F = ma) and rotational (M = I*alpha) equations of motion
3 DOF equations of motion
The translational equations of motion uncoupled from the rotational equations of motion by assuming small angular rates and negligible effect of control surface deflections on aerodynamic forces
dynamic stability
the stability characteristics of the actual motion of an airplane following a small disturbance
trajectory analysis
the determination of the cg position of an airplane
with time using the 3 DOF equations of motion
stability and control
the analysis of the translational motion of the
cg and the rotational motion about the cg using the 6 DOF equations of motion. Questions concerning the response to a disturbance and handling qualities are answered
airplane sizing
the iterative process of finding the dimensions of an
airplane that has prescribed performance and stability and control characteristics
simulation
a computer program in which equations of motion are integrated numerically with respect to time
