Muscles of Mastication

1. Temporalis- Closes jaw and pulls mandible forward and backward


2. Masseter- Closes jaw and retrudes mandible


3. Lateral Pterygoid- Protrudes jaw and opens mouth


4. Medial Pterygoid- Pulls mandible upward and forward and closes mouth.

Muscles of the Neck

1. Sternocleidomastoid- Rotates head right and left


2. Platsma- Depresses mandible and lower lip


3. Trapezius- Moves the head to one side or backward.

1. Digastric- Depresses mandible and elevates hyoid bone.

3. Styloglossus- Brings tongue upward and backward


4. Palatoglossus- Brings tongue upwards during swallowing

Insertion- Coronide process and ramus of mandible

Masseter

Origin- Zygomatic arch


Insertion- Ramus and angle of mandible

Lateral and Medial Pterygoid

Lateral- Origin: Sphenoid bone and pterygoid plate


Insertion: Condyle of mandible and TMJ capsule



Medial- Origin: Pterygoid plate, palatine bone and maxillary tubersity


Insertion: Ramus and angle of mandible
