Fission

Process in which large nuclei are split into smaller pieces, releasing large amounts of energy

Fusion

A reaction when large amounts of energy are released when a small nuclei combine to form larger nuclei

Atomic energy

Energy generated by splitting the atom

Fission process...

Begins when a neutron collides with the nucleus of a uranium atom

•Resulting nucleus is unstable and splits into smaller nuclei

•Releases several neutrons and large amounts of gamma radiation and energy

•the neutrons emitted have high energies and bombard other uranium...chain reaction

Chain reaction

A fission reaction that will continue once it has been initiated by high energy neutron bombarding a heavy nucleus such as uranium-235

Critical mass

Sufficient quantities of uranium-235 must be brought together to sustain a chain reaction

When fusion happens...

Mass is lost and tremendous amount of energy is released even more than fission

•It requires 100000000°C to overcome repulsion of the hydrogen nuclei

•Continiuosly in the sun and other stars

•Isotopes of hydrogen combine to form helium and large amounts of energy

•scientist expect less radioactive waste with shorter 1/2 lives

Still in experimental stage because requires extremely high temp that is difficult to reach and maintain

Half life

The length of time it takes for one-half of a radioactive sample to decay
