Central Nervous System (CNS)
The brain and spinal chord. Integrates and coordinates what info goes in/out
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
That portion of the nervous system that lies outside the brain and spinal cord; includes nerves, ganglia, enteric neurons, and sensory receptors.
Nerve
A rope-like bundle of neurons fiber (axon and dendrites). Many neurons
Connective Tissue
Surrounds the nerves and protects them.
Neuron
Cells of the nervous system specialized to generate and transmit electrical signals. Basic Unit of nervous system cells of the nervous system.
Sensory Input
Neurons that sense stimuli and report back to the central nervous system. (____ neurons which use the 5 senses).
Integration/Interneuron/Innervate
To make a synaptic connection with an effector organ. (Analyze and interpret)
Motor Neuron
A single nerve cell that extends from the brain or spinal cord to a muscle or gland and carries movement instructions to muscle. An efferent neuron.
Ganglia
Clusters of neuronal cell bodies-outside CNS
Effector
Tissues or organs that are controlled by nervous system components; means for the control center's response (output) to the stimulus.
Resting Potential
Voltage difference (- inside, +outside) that exists across the plasma membrane where the gates are closed not allowing Na+ to go in, and K+ to go out.
Depolarization/Threshold
A change in membrane potential where inside becomes more positive compared to the outside.
Impulse
Electrical currents that run down/across neurons; action potential.
Synapse
Where neurons nearly touch other neurons, muscles, or glands to communicate
Neurotransmitter
The chemical messengers that get released from neurons that "talk" to other tissues. The thing that sends the info between the neurons
Two endocrine system glands associated with the brain
Pituitary Gland, Pineal Gland
