Major Depression

•Will affect larger percentage of the population


•most common disorder


•1/5 woman will experience


•Affects ability to experience pleasure- things that used to make them happy, don't anymore.

Dysthymia

•Very long depression


• Lasts 5-10 years


•Not everyday, but more days than not depressed


•People tend to be very dark, see the dark side about everything.

Bipolar Disorder

•only about 1% of population has this.


•people will range from depression to hypermania

Hypomania

•people on the go all the time


•lots of energy


•can be very successful, but found irritating to other people

Hypermania

•highly energized


•always on the go


•Extreme hyper activity, aggressive behavior, tend to engage in self- destructing behavior

Panic Disorder (an anxiety disorder)

• A lot of anx. but doesn't happen all the time


•hypervenalating

•intense fear out of proportion w/ any danger

•Period of time someone can't remember


•Psychological issue, not physical

Dissociative Fuge

•Leave and relocate and have no idea who they are or where they're going


•"how did I get here?"

Dissociative Identity Disorder

•changes into different person


•multiple personality disorder


•original person is not aware of other personalities


•Brain acts differently depending on which personality is present

Ranges from depression to mania and back (cycle)

Cycle between depression and normal

Cycle between mild depression and mild hypomania

Schizophrenia

•Thought disorder


•Process information differently than people normally think.

•late teens, early 20s


Disorganized Schizophrenia

•Child like


•"crazy- person"


•not normally dangerous


•loose associations (thoughts they have are not very connected)

Paranoid Schizophrenia

•Disstrustful (towards people and the government)


•hallucinations (visual, auditory-->hear voices, Tactile)


•Delusions (false beliefs, a lot have religious bends)


•Grandeur (believe god is talking to them)


•persecution (believe the rest of us don't)

Catatonic

•stupor (very little movement) waxy movement


•agitation (watch out)- violent


•very little that can be done


•usually institutionalized
