What is the endocrine system?
The endocrine system is composed of organs and glands that secrete regulatory substances called hormones directly into the bloodstream.
What are the two major systems that control the entire body?
The nervous system and the endocrine system.
Where are the endocrine and nervous system linked?
They are linked in the hypothalamus of the brain.
FSH causes?
FSH causes growth and maturation of the ovarian follicle and spermatogenesis in males.
LH causes?
LH causes ovulation in females and production of testosterone in males.
What is a Gonadotropin?
A follicle stimulating hormone.
What drugs are gonadotropins?
Cystorelin
Factrel
What are Estrogens?
Responsible for female reproductive maturation.
What do estrogens do?
Inhibit ovulation
Increase uterine tone
Used in dogs to abort and control urinary.
Used in beef cattle to promote weight gain.
Can cause anemia
What is drug example of estrogen?
Diethylstilbestrol (DES)
What is Progestin?
A synthetic progesterone.

Progesterone: A female sex hormone that helps maintain pregnancy and prevent rejection of the developing embryo or fetus.
What does Progestin do?
Inhibits release of GnRH to produce inactive ovary.
Suppresses estrus and can treat false pregnancy.
Can also treat progestin-responsive dermatitis
What are some drug examples of Progestins?
Megestrol Acetate
Altrenogest (Regu-Mate)
What is Prostaglandins?
?
What do Prostaglandins do?
Causes lysis of the corpus luteum
Will contract uterine muscle
Will likely cause abortion
Will initiate new estrus cycle
Will treat pyometra

Can be used with corticosteroids to induce late term abortion.
What are some example drugs of Prostaglandins?
Lutalyse
Prostamate
What is lysis?
A process of disintegration or dissolution of cells.
What is a corpus luteum (CL)?
Forms immediately after ovulation from the ruptured graafian follicle and regresses quickly if ovum is not fertilized but persists throughout the pregnancy if fertilized.

Yellowish mass of progesterone secreting endocrine tissue.
What is Oxytocin?
Secreted by pituitary gland and stimulates contraction of uterine muscle and secretion of milk.
What does Oxytocin do?
It causes uterine contraction and stimulates mammary glands for development and milk letdown!

Used to aid in delivery of the placenta, to facilitate uterine involution, and to induce milk letdown.
What are Androgens?
A male sex hormone
What do Androgens do?
Primarily male sex hormone.
Needed for male reproductive maturation
Used to treat urinary issues in male dogs
What are some drug examples of androgens?
Testosterone cypionate
Mibolerone (Prevents estrus in dogs by blocking release of LH)
What is Bromocriptine used for?
A dopamine agonist and prolactin inhibitor used mainly in dogs for PREGNANCY TERMINATION AFTER MISMATING.

Also used to treat pseudopregnancy issues.
What does the Thyroid gland do?
The thyroid controls metabolic rate, growth and development, body temperature, metabolism, skin condition, and resistance to infection.
What do you use to treat Hypothyroidism? (Common in dogs)
Levothyroxine sodium (T4 isomer)
What do you use to treat Hyperthyroidism? (Common in cats)
Methimazole (interferes with iodine uptake)

or Radioactive iodine to destroy thyroid tissue.
What is Diabetes Mellitus?
Lack of insulin production.
How to treat Diabetes Mellitus?
Give insulin!

If to much insulin: Give Karo Syrup!
