Quasi-war
kept the US neutral between Britain and France. Adams sends ministers to Europe. Met by ambassadors of French government who demand bribes. Called the XYZ affair.
Logan Act
Logan is a Quaker. Goes to Paris to negotiate the release of some sailors. Logan Act 1799 forbids private individuals from engaging in private diplomacy.
Makens Bill Number 2
Replaced the Embargo Act of 1809.

War of Tippecanoe/War of 1812
The Shawnee tribe are increasingly causing problems under Tecumseh, Madison sends someone and 1,000 men to fight the Shawnee at the battle of Tippecanoe. Madison asks Congress for a declaration for War. Some call this the second war of Independence or the war of 1812.
War of 1812
War began when the US attack Canada. Fail. US attack 2 more times and fail. The US navy is very small but it wins 80% of its battles.
Commodore Perry
Set up riggings on his ships so they could rotate 180 degrees.
Missouri Compromise
Agreement between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in Congress that dealt with new western territories being slave or not.
Van Buran System
Van Buren wants to start a new political party that forbids the talk of slavery. Promises jobs to those who will get out the vote for the party. This means from now on, the government starts to grow. To get elected, a President had to promise. The states are supposed to remain powerful and the government is supposed to remain weak.
Nullification
idea that the states can not observe federal law if they don’t want to.
Tariff of Abominations
The goal of the tariff was to protect industry in the northern and southern United States, which were being driven out of business by low-priced European and particularly British manufactured goods. This prompted the U.S. to put a tax on imported goods. The South, however, was harmed by having to pay higher prices on goods the region did not produce. By reducing the importation of British goods, it also made it difficult for the British to pay for the cotton they imported from the South.
Webster Hayne Debate
involves a bill introduced my Thomas Hart Benton. Lower the price of western land so people can afford it. Southerns would use it the most because they need more land for slaves.
Bank War
no national money. Second bank of the united states was created in 1816 after the war. Nicholas Biddle was named the President of the Bank of the United States in 1820. BUS gets a lot of credit for the growth of the country. 1832 Biddle tries to recharter the BUS 4 years early. The bills passes Congress but Jackson vetos it. Redraft the charter and Jackson vetos again. Jackson takes the US money out of the BUS and puts it in the banks of his friends.
Panic of 1837
Mexico is harvesting silver. With more silver, comes mores wealth. US buy porcelain and tea from China. China buy drugs from England. England has a bunch of extra money. They loan to US. Silver mines dry up. Shipments everywhere stop. British raise interest rates. Cripples US economy.
Rise of the Whigs
Three major Whigs were Henry Clay (KY), Daniel Webster (MA), and John C. Calhoun (SC). Calhoun is pro slavery, Webster is anti slavery, and Clay will say whatever to get elected.

The most important part of the Fugitive Slave Law: citizens were required to lend assistance to a slave catcher. By requiring citizens to help slave catchers, it makes you be a part of the immortality. There was massive disobedience. It was impossible to enforce.
