are intended to be connected together, usually by soldering to a Printed Circuit Board (PCB), to create an electronic circuit with a particular function (for example an amplifier, radio receiver, oscillator, wireless).

Electronic Components

Types of Electronic Components

Passive and Active Components. Both these types of components can be either Through-Hole or SMD.

There are 2 types

These components are those that do not have gain or directionality. They are also called Electrical elements or electrical components. Example: Resistors, Capacitors, Diodes, Inductors.

1. Passive Components

These components are those that have gain or directionality. Example: Transistors, Integrated Circuits or ICs, Logic Gates.

2. Active Components

Components to make electrical connection.

1. Terminals and Connectors:

Function of Basic Electronic Components

Components used to resist current.

2. Resistors

Function of Basic Electronic Components

Components that may be made to either conduct (closed) or not (open).

3. Switches

Function of Basic Electronic Components

Components that store electrical charge in an electrical field.

4. Capacitors

Function of Basic Electronic Components

These are Electrical components that use magnetism.

5.Magnetic or Inductive Components

Function of Basic Electronic Components

Components that use more than 1 type of Passive Component.

6. Network Components

Function of Basic Electronic Components

Passive components that use piezoelectric. effect.

7. Piezoelectric devices, crystals, resonators

Function of Basic Electronic Components

Electronic control parts with no moving parts.

8.Semiconductors

Function of Basic Electronic Components

Components that conduct electricity in only one direction.

9.Diodes

Function of Basic Electronic Components

A semiconductor device capable of amplification.

10.Transistors

Function of Basic Electronic Components

A microelectronic computer circuit incorporated into a chip or semiconductor; a whole system rather than a single component.

11.Integrated Circuits or ICs

Function of Basic Electronic Component

is a semiconductor device used to amplify or switch electrical signals and power. It is one of the basic building blocks of modern electronics. It is composed of semiconductor material, usually with at least three terminals for connection to an electronic circuit.

Transistor

If capacitors store energy in the form of electric field, then ______ are devices that store energy in the form of Magnetic Field. _______ is nothing but a wire that is wound in the form of a coil._____ is widely used in AC equipment like filters, chokes, tuned circuits etc.

Inductor

A _____ is a non-linear semiconductor device, that allows the flow of current in one direction. A _____ is a two – terminal device and the two terminals are Anode and Cathode respectively.

Diodes

study

the invention that changed the future of electronic circuits. It is a semiconductor device that can be used to either switch electrical power or amplify electronic signals.

Transistors

A Transistor is a 3 terminal device that can be either a current controlled device or a voltage controlled device. Different types of transistors exists. Basically they are classified as1) Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJT) and2) Field Effect Transistors (FET).

is an integration or incorporation of several electronic components (mainly transistors) on a single device (or chip) made up of a semiconductor material (usually Silicon).

Integrated Circuits (ICs)

Almost all electronic devices like TVs, Mobile Phones, Laptops, Audio Players, Routers, etc. have Integrated Circuit in them. ICs are again divided into Analog ICs and Digital ICs. Analog ICs work on Analog Signals like Temperature, Audio, etc. which are continuously varying in nature. Digital ICs on the other hand, work on Discrete Signals i.e. zero volts and a non-zero volts (like 5V or 3.3V) that are represented as Binary 0 and 1.

Before the invention of transistor ________were used in place of transistors. This is defined as an electron tube that controls the flow of electrons in vacuum.

Vacuum Tubes

CRT screens used in old TVs and computer monitors are best examples for vacuum tubes.
