How did social identity theory begin? Describe it

Started with social psychol. Sherif in the Robbers cave expirement.Sherif took 22 normal schoolboys to a summer camp in Robbers cave, Okla. Randomly assigned them into 2 groups and segregated them for a week. Made them compete. Hostility emerged and they couldn't agree on anything

What was the basis of sorial identity theory? Describe it

In the 70's, Tajfel & Turner similarily divided adult subjects into 2 groups (wierd criteria). Segregated. In-group favortism and Out-group discrimination

What was Tajfel hypothesis?

That group membership and favortism boosts self esteem (human need)

-Nationalist groups are qualitativley different from other groups
