Battle of Vicksburg

The union split the Confederacy in half. Cut off resources to confederacy

Congresses attempt to help ex slaves. Helped feed, clothe, educate, and provide medical care. Participated in the redistribution of land

Black Codes

Laws made by state legislature which allowed officials to apprehend unemployed blacks and fine them, then hire them out to pay these fines. Forbade black from working as anything but domestic servants or plantation workers

Crop-Lien System

A credit system widely used in the south after the Civil War in which farmers promised a portion of their future crops in exchange for supplies from local merchants
