Gerontology-
The multidisciplinary study of old age
Centenarians-
Going to be grandpa (a person who lives 100 or more years)
Smoking and secondhand smoke-
Smoking increases lung cancer, increases heart disease, increases asthma, increase erectile dysfunction. 20% of all adults smoke. Secondhand smoke= 5% of non smokers live with an adult who smokes, 18% children live with smokers. Increase bronchitis, and infant death syndrome.
Compensation-
One covers up weaknesses, frustrations, or incompetence in one life area through the gratification or drive towards excellence in another area
Terror Management theory-
A conflict that is having a desire to live but realizingthat death is inevitable. Causes terror and scares humans.
Senescence-
The process of aging where the body becomes less strong and more stressed
Organ Reserve-
The capacity of organs to allow the body to cope with stress via extra unused functioning ability
Testosterone-
A sex hormone, the best known of androgens secreted in far greater amounts than females in males.
Serial Monogamy-
Most adults only have one sexual partner when they are at that age
Mood disorders-
Happens before they hit the age of 30, can be treated with medication or therapy. Can appear disappear and reappear. (depression and bipolar disorder.)
Schizophrenia-
Mental illness, hallucinations, affect, social, delusions, 1/5 have schizophrenia.

Intimate Partner Violence-
More common in emerging adults, both as victims and perpetrators than those over the age of 25. Alcohol and drugs make violence more likely and more severe.
Edgework-
Occupations or recreational activities that involve a degree of danger or risk of danger. Some like to live on the edge so they look for things that do so
