Film Lamination?
-process of bonding a thin transparent layer of film
-most films have a layer of adhesive that is activated by heat and applied under pressure
What are the 4 process of film lamination?
1. Polypropylene
2. Polyester
3. Acetate
4. Vinyl
What is film lamination commonly used on?
-business cards
-ID Cards, playing cards
-Menus & Placemats
-Poster
-Maps
-Bookmarks
-Binders, boxes, slip cases
-Dust Jackets
-Book Cover
Why is film lamination commonly used?
-transparent decorative layer
-to provide stiffness to a product
-to add a protective coating to prevent any damage from handling
-to add a gloss finish/to add a matte finish
-used in place of other coatings like varnishes, aqueous (water based), UV
-protection from liquids
-protection from UV rays
-to create dry erase wipe off boards
Name the 2 methods of film lamination
Wet method- solvents or water and adhesive is applied to the film as the film is applied to the paper, substrate. (Usually done with a machine)

Thermal Method- uses heat (250 to 300 degrees F) to bond the film, which has a pre applied glue to the stock. The glue on the film is heated and under pressure the film is attached to the substrate
Some of the Types of Film Lamination
-Gloss
-Matte/Dull/Satin/Deluster (Trade Mark)
-Rigid/Flexible/Layflat
-UV protective
-Food/Bio Safe/Antimicrobial/Anti-bacterial
-Environmental Safe
-Superior Grip
-Anti-graffiti
-Clear mount
-1 sided/2 sided
-Hot/Cold
3 Film Lamination FInishes
Gloss- Adds shine and enhances colour
Matte- Adds a dull flat finish keeps colour quite true. Has a very silky touch
Delustered- very unique, silky touch, highly recommended for single-side lamination
Layflat Film Lamination
-ideal for perfect bound, case bond, coil bound and stitched cover, box slicks, clandender cover, stickers, poster, trading cards, postcard, presentation folder, annual reports and art books
Polypropylene Film Lamination
-1 sided films
- ideal for perfect bound, case bound, coil bond and stitched book covers, box slicks, calendar covers, stickers, posters and presentation folders
*Used at GCM for 1 sided lamination is not commonly used in industry
Two-sided Lamination Films
Very Durable, adds protection and longevity
4 Speciality lamination Films
-Glueable Stampable (binder skins)
-Metalized Polyester (many different looks can be achieved with these films)
-Embossed (available in a variety of textures)
-Vinyl (used on mouse pads)
Low Environmental Impact (LEI) Lamination
-ideal for products that require the durability of a
lamination but need to meet environmental standards

-made from cellulose it is biodegradable, recyclable and compostable

-can be used for 1 or 2 sided laminating

-otherwise other films are not recyclable
SureGrip Film Lamination
-for jobs where film laminate is not adhering properly
Why was SureGrip developed?
-to have superior adhesion to digital prints where fuser oils or other toner additives might cause problems
What does SureGrip provide?
-provides enhance speed to lamination
Bio Lamination Film
-thermal lamination film that is enhanced with the antimicrobial protection of AgION Technologies
-helps prevent the spread of bacteria, molds, mildews, and fungi
-available for wide range of laminating films
Lamination & other finishing processes
-laminating is usually done before diecutting, scoring, embossing and debossing b/c the laminating process can smash or flatten the raised area or other effects
-foil stamping is done before film laminating to minimize adhesion Problems
Troubleshooting/Best Practices, Problems & Solutions
Problems
-film does not adhere fully
-de-lamination
-lifting of film at scores(folds) and edges of sheet
-wrinkling of paper

Reasons/Solutions
-use thinner paper
-use heavier paper
-use heavier film (has more adhesive)
-on darker colours use heavier films
-dust the pre printed press sheets
-use wax free inks
-machine too cold/hot
-rollers pressure too tight/loose
What Colours fade first for lamination?
Yellow & Magenta
