CAN'T FIND THE STARTUP DISK

what can cause?

1. Hardware Issues - Drive, PRAM
2. File System Issue

What does this mean?

What does this mean?

CAN'T FIND OR LOAD KERNEL

What can cause?

Likely a file system issue

CARD 2

CARD 2

issues affect boot, mounting external drives, programs/session crashes, data loss - depends on what data is corrupted

ie: Partition tables, Bootloader,ProTools executable, ProTools sessions - file issues

DATA CORRUPTION:

Logical Error: data written incorrectly to medium due to faulty RAM, interruptions, program bug

Surface Errors(Physical): 'Bad Sectors' cause the medium to be unable to store data correctly

File System Repair Programs:

don't typically fix files - just file systems

MacOS: Disk Utility > First Aid (shitty) option

-make sure Storage Device is selected to verify/repair Partition Table Structures

-Select Volume/Partition to repair file system structures - catalog tree, bitmap

-can only Fix Logical Errors

Windows: CHK DSK > windows key + X > Cmd Prompt (admin)

Basic Syntax: chkdsk c: /f /r (be aware of spaces)

Repairing System Disk

often OS drive's file system can't be repaired while OS is fully functional

Running First Aid:

1. Within OS

2. From Recovery HD

3. From Internet Recovery

4. Using Safe Mode

Recovery HD

-a 'hidden' partition on internal hard drives that provides repair/re-install options

*Command + R @ boot

Recovery HD's are typically created during OS install

Internet Recovery

-In case Recovery is not available

*Cmd + Opt + R @ boot (or if Recovery HD fails)

-runs slower but will run!

Safe Mode

Hold Shift @ boot

Runs First Aid and starts macOS with minimum of KEXTS - kernel extensions (drivers)

Cautions:

when fixing file systems

-use appropriate repair programs

-be careful when APFS comes out

*don't use older repairs with newer OS

APFS - apple file system - new - let others be the guinea pigs

- might not have First Aid

Verbose Mode

-for visual troubleshooting of boot/shutdown procedure

-good for hangs/freezing

-wait for it to finish and then google

DISK WARRIOR

by Allsoft ($100)

-3rd party Macintosh Repair Software

-run from USB key - use the right version HFS+

1. Find Drive

2. Rebuild it

3. Will tell you if it can't??

Brilliant - uncanny ability to find missing drives!

Fixing Surface Errors on MAC

(Tech Tool Can)

In Disk Utility
