Nitrous Oxide
Class: Analgesic/anestetic

Pharm: Depresses the CNS causing anestesia and change in pain perception

Indications: Moderate to severe pain, burns, anxiety

Contraindications: ALOC, head injury, shock

Side FX: cyanosis, apnea

Dosage: self administered by breathing deeply from mask, pt will drop mask with pain relief.
Dopamine
Class: Sympathomimetic

Pharm: precursor to norepinephrine

Contraindications: should not be given for hypotension secondary to hypovolemia.

Side FX: tachycardia, nausea, vomiting

Dosage:
1-2 mcg/kg/min: Dilates renal, mesenteric, and cerebral arteries (crush injury)

2-10mcg/kg/min: increase cardiac output (inotropic)(pulmonary edema)

10-20mcg/kg/min: increased peripheral, renal, and mesenteric arterial and venous constriction--increases vascular resistance and preload.(bradycardia and anaphylaxis)
Heparin
Class: Anticoagulant

Pharm: Inhibits and inactivates normal blood clotting

Indications: AMI used with fibrinolytics, maintains patency of venous access devices

Contra: Active bleeding, hypertension

Side FX: none

Dosage: AMI: 60 units/kg - max 4000 units
Access heparin lock: 10-100 units/mL IVP after medication administration
Succinylcholine
Class: Depolarizing neuromuscular blocker

Pharm: Binds with receptor sites paralyzing skeletal muscles. Rapid onset with short duration. It has no effect on consciousness

Indications: Paralyzing agent prior to endotracheal intubation

Contra: Eye injury, acute renal failure

Side FX: bradycardia, hypotension

Dosage: 1--1.5mg/kg IV/IO/IM
Amyl Nitrate
Class: Nitrate

Pharm: vasodilator and smooth muscle relaxant. Removes cyanide ion via complex mechanism that converts it into a form that can be eliminated easily.

Indications: Cyanide poisoning (bitter almond smell on breath)

Contra: none with cyanide poisoning

Side FX: headache, tachycardia

Dosage: inhalant should be broken and inhaled. Repeat as needed until pt delivered to ER.
Etomidate
Class: non-narcotic, non-barbiturate sedative/hypnotic

Pharm: short acting anesthesia with no analgesic effects

Indications: Hypnotic/sedative prior to intubation, TCP, and cardioversion

Contra: labor/delivery

Side FX: involuntary muscle movement, tachycardia

Dosage: 0.3 mg/kg IV over 30-60 minutes
