PID and endometriosis

has limited value during acute PID; cannot dx until pt. has tubo-ovarian abscess or hydro- or pyosalpinx; in the chronic setting it can identify dilated fallopian tubes, abscess, and complex intraperitoneal fluid
ultrasound
the presence of endometrial glands or stroma in an abnormal location; occurs in two locations; within the myometrium (internal) and within the adnexal region (external)
endometriosis
in many cases this is diagnosed on clinical grounds and is not detectable sonographically; especially if diffuse
