Why is it less efficient to eat predators than herbivores? |
There is a longer food chain so more energy is lost. |

What occurs to the energy at each stage of a food chain? |
Energy is lost through excretion, as heat from respiration and when indigestible parts are lost by egestion. |

What occurs to the biomass at each stage of the food chain? |
Biomass is lost as carbon dioxide from respiration. This means you will need more space to farm the food for the predator to produce less food overall. |

How can you make the food chains on farms more efficient? |
Limit the movement of the animal so less respiration occurs. Control the temperature of their environment so less energy used to keep warm. Therefore more energy will be used to create biomass (growing). |

How can we protect fish stocks? |
Decrease the net size or increase the mesh size so smaller young fish are not caught; next generation preserved.
Introduce fishing quotas - limits on the fish numbers caught. |

What are food miles? |
The distance ingredients in food is moved before we eat it. The further the distance traveled, the more carbon dioxide produced by vehicles. |

What is Fusarium? |
Fungus that can produce mycoprotein (i.e quorn). Suitable for vegetarians. Grow it on fungus in aerobic conditions so that respiration is very efficient. |

Why do the fermenters we grow mycroproteins in often have a water jacket? |
To keep it cool. Rapid growth produces enough heat from respiration to denature its own enzymes. |

Why would growing plants be better than using animals for food? |
Few stages in the food chain so less energy lost. Less space required as you eat the crop directly and do not have to provide food for an animal. |
