General Systems Theory
First proposed by Ludwig von Bertalanffy in 1920's, the family is viewed as a system of interrelated parts, mutually impacting one another. Systemic change can impact individual change and vice-versa.

Open system
a system with a continuous flow to and from the outside is considered open.
Closed system
a system whose boundaries are not easily crossed.
Boundary
an invisible line of demarcation that separates an individual, a subsystem, or a system from outside surroundings. They help define the individual autonomy of a subsystems separate members, as well as helping to differentiate subsystems from one another.
subsystems
examples include spousal, parental,a nd sibling subsystems. designed to carry out particular functions or processes within the system as a whole.
