How many people are in low-paid work?
Nearly 4 million are in low-paid work

The Labour Government introduced the National Minimum Wage, currently £6.19 if over21.

The government pays a variety of benefits including tax credits, housing benefit and state pensions to support those on low incomes and other vulnerable groups
How many British people are unemployed?
Currently 2.43 million British people are unemployed.
Examples of government action against unemployment?
The Employment and Support Allowance is paid to people who have illnesses or disabilities which severely affect their ability to work.

The current Government is attempting to improve conditions for business so more jobs are created in the private sector.

The jobseekers Allowance is the latest name for unemployment benefit. It is designed to encourage JSA payment for a single person aged 25 or over is £67.50 per week.

The New Deal is a project introduced by the Labour Government that originally targeted youth unemployment (18 to 44 year olds). Each claimant was assigned an advisor to support them in finding work.
Gender inequality ?
High cost of childcare for single parents and working mothers.

Women with university degrees face a 4% loss in lifetime earnings as a result of motherhood, while mothers with no qualifications face a 58% loss.
Racial discrimination facts?
In the Uk in 201o 48% of blacks aged 16-24 were unemployed, compared to 20% of young whites. In 2010 nearly three quarters of Bangladeshi children, and half of black African children Britain were growing up in poverty.
government action on this problem?
The human rights act 1998 means that British courts must interpret legislation in a way that is compatible with the European Convention on Human Rights. The act bans discrimination on the grounds of race, gender and religion

The 2001 race Relations act introduced a duty for companies and the public sector to set targets for recruiting more ethnic minority workers
Consequences of poverty
Social exclusion
This refers to individual and families being unable to play a full part in society, often due to poverty and low income.
Example- Parents may be unable to pay for school trips for their children, leaving them excluded from other children's activities.

Poor quality housing/homeless
Poor housing is related to low income which, in extreme cases, can result in homeless.
