- convert psyhological difficulty into physical symptoms unconsciously - present with their perception of what that illness looks like, but if suggest "usually people..." then the next time will do that - conversion decreases the anxiety - a physical defense mechanism |

Hypochondriasis criteria
|
- preoccupation with fears
- preoccupation persists despite appropriate medical tests and reassurances - other d/o are ruled out - preoccupation causes significant impairment in social or occupational fx or causes marked distress |

Pain D/O criteria
|
- pain in one or more anatomical sites
- causes significant impairment in fx or causes marked distress - pain associated with psychological factors - symptoms not intentionally produced or feigned - Pain may be associated with a psychological and/or medical condition |

Body Dysmorphic D/O criteria
|
- preoccupation with some imagined defect in appearance
- preoccupation causes significant impairment in social or occupational fx or causes distress - preoccupation not better accounted for by another mental disorder |

Depersonalization D/O criteria
|
- Persistent or recurrent experience of feeling detached from an outside of one's mental processes or body
- reality testing remains intact - the experience causes significant impairment in social or occupational fx or causes marked distress |
