History is our story.

We are descendants of immigrants; we are influenced by the section of the country in which we live; we are children and grandchildren of people who lived during the Great Depression, the Cold War, etc.
How are we helped personally by learning about people of the past?
We are ennobled by those who have done good and conveicted by those who have done wrong.
How does history help us to evaluate what we hear from the media today?
It reminds us that the ideas and assumptions people have today are not the only ones possible, and perhaps they are not even good ideas and assumptions.
