Portuguese Trading Empire
• Portugal took the lead in European exploration
• Portuguese ships sailed to the south coast of Africa, called the Gold Coast
• Then they traveled along the Indian Ocean to to the coast of India (Vasco de Gama was the sailor)
• Portuguese fleets traveled afterwards to take control and defeat the Muslims
• The Portuguese continued their trade into Melaka, they wanted to control the "Spice Lands"
• From Melaka they sent expeditions to China and the spice lands
• They signed a treaty with local rules to export cloves to Europe
• Although they had the exportations management they didn't have the desire to colonize the region

• Portugal and Spain were the first European countries to expand to America
Voyage to Columbus
• He was born in Geneva, Italy

• He wanted to reach India. So he convinced Isabella and Ferdinand to give him the money for the voyage

• He reached America in October 12, 1492, Arriving to Cuba

• Portugal and Spain were afraid new territories might be claimed

• They made the "Treaty of Tordesillas" in 1494

• They divided the northern part of America for Spain and the Eastern part of the world for Portugal

• Many other people noticed that Columbus had discovered new land:
a) John Cabot explored New England's behalf
b) Pedro Cabral explored South America (1500)
c) Amerigo Vespucci made several voyages and wrote letters that would describe the new land. America was named after him

• By 1550, Spaniards had taken control of Northern Mexico

• In South America, Francisco Pizarro took control of the Inca empire

• A part of North America belonged to Spain (except for Brasil)

• Spanish people were supposed to protect native Americans
