Experiment
The deliberate Manipulation of one variable to measure its effect on another varibale. The only method that allows conclusions about cause and effect
Independant variable (IV)
The aspect of the research situation manipulated by the researcher
Dependant Variable (DV)
The aspect of the participants behaviour measured in the study
Laboratory experiment
An experiment carried out in very tightly controlled suroundings
Ecological validity
The degree to which behaviour is observed in a study reflect behaviours that actually occur in natural settings
Field experiment
Participants observed in natural settings. Researcher can still manipulate variables
natural experiment
Reseachers take advantage of a natural situation to investigate circumstances they can't manipulate.
Independant group design
Research uses two or more groups to make comparisions. Each group experiences one level of the IV, the DV remains constant
Experimental group
The particapants group that experiences the IV being tested
Controlled group
The participent goup that doesn't experience the IV being tested
Repeated measures design
A research design where the same participants are used for all conditions
Matched pairs design
Research involving two participent groups consisting of pairs pf individuals who are as similar as possible, often twins
Longitudinal studies
Same participants studies over a number of years, even a lifetime
Sample
Participants actually used in a study drawn from a larger population
Cross sectional studies
Using groups of people of different age groups to examine changes over time
