Give the main features of a chronic illness

- Long-term
- No cure as such - Often present with multiple health problems - Uncertainty as to whether the illness will progress - Requirement to adapt |

How do those with a chronic illness experience uncertainty pre diagnosis?
|
- May wait a long time before a diagnosis
- Diagnosis may be deemed non-legitimate - Symptoms may be unexplained |

How do those with a chronic illness experience uncertainty post-diagnosis?
|
Short term - managing unpredictable nature of symptoms (not being able to make plans)
Long term - unpredictable nature of the disease progression |

What is stigma?
|
An attribute that is deeply discrediting
|

What is discrediting stigma?
|
Visible differences eg facial disfigurement, a wheelchair. May become defined by their condition eg a schizophrenic
|

What is discreditable stigma?
|
Differences are not apparent immediately eg HIV or depression. Can be managed or hidden to avoid discrediting stigma. Living under threat of exposure can be very stressful
|

What is the difference between enacted and felt stigma?
|
Enacted - actual, first hand experience of stigma. Persecution or discrimination
Felt - fear a condition will be negatively viewed eg someone going to a GUM clinic. Can cause much anxiety and unhappiness |

What are the three main strategies to manage stigma?
|
1. Passing (attampt to pass as normal)
2. Covering (with a discrediting stigma, may try and cover condition) 3. Withdrawal |

Why are some chronic illnesses stigmatized?
|
- If its seen to be bearers fault/responsibility
- When conditions are contagious - When condition is readily apparent and percieved as repellent, ugly or upsetting - If it may place others in danger (eg schizophrenia) |

|
