Function?

- Remove metabolic waste

- Remove excess substances

- Remove Urine

What are metabolic wastes?

- Carbon Dioxide

- Nitrogen compounds (ammonia, uric acid, urea & amino acids)

- Mineral salts

- Water

What are the organs of excretion?

- Kidneys

- Lungs

- Liver

- Skin

What do they do?

Work together to maintain homeostasis and keep the body's internal environment constant

Kidneys function:

- Produces urine

- Maintains body's fluid balance

Urine travels through ureter where it is then stored in urinary bladder before leaving the body through the urethra

Three parts of the kidney and their function?

- Cortex = outer part of the kidney that filters blood

- Medulla = middle part of the kidney that contains collection ducts which carries filtrate to the pelvis

- Pelvis = inner region connected to the ureter

What is filtrate?

Water, glucose, urea, amino acids and various salts

What are nephrons?

Part of the kidneys where filtering of the blood occurs, there was millions of nephrons

Liver function:

- Detoxifies blood = removes substances e.g. toxins and changes them into an inactive form

- Breaks down red blood cells = RBC don't live long

- Excretes bile = into the gall bladder to aid in fat digestion

- Forms the urea = excess amino acids from the protein digestion are broken down by deamination

What is deamination?

Where amino group is removed from amino acid and is changed to ammonia, ammonia is toxic to the body so is changed into urea and then filtered out by the kidney

Lungs function:

- Produces metabolic waste

- Produces water

- Produces Carbon Dioxide

Skin function:

- Produces sweat (water, salt & some urea) = regulates the body temperature

- Capillaries close to the skin surface to help eliminate or conserve heat

Arthropod excretory system:

- Excretory products are excreted into the gut lumen, the malpighian tubules keep the haemolymph clean by removing waste

[ Haemolymph is fluid surrounding the body cavity ]

Three parts of a birds excretory system:

- Kidneys (filter)

- Cloaca

- Ureter
