What are the kidneys 2 main functions? |

Proximal Tubule

Descending Loop of Henle |
-Reabsorbs Water but not salt -Fluids must be hypertonic to move from tubule to interstitial fluid -Filtrate loses water as it descends from the cortex to medulla (concentration increases) |

Ascending Loop of Henle |
Limb is permeable to salt but not water. - Thin leads to Thick -Thin part accepts salt and allows NaCl to diffuse at tubule -Filtrate becomes more dilute as it moves up the cortex |

Selective Secretion and reabsorption -K regulation and NaCL concentration -selectively secrets K and selectively reabsorbs NaCl -pH regulation and reabsorption of bicarb ion |

Permeable to water not salt -carries filtrate back to the medulla and renal pelvis -Major role in how much NaCl is excreted with urine by actively reabsorbing NaCl -Loses water by osmosis to hypertonic solution outside the duct = concentrating the urine |

What two hormone regulate the kidneys? |
1. Aldosterone (produced/stored in the cortex of the adrenal gland) 2. Antidiuretic (produced in the hypothalamus and stored in the pituitary gland) |

What is the function of ADH? |
Osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus monitor the amount of water in the blood. When blood is too concentrated, ADH is released. ADH causes the distal tubes to become permeable to water |

Aldosterone |
Secretion is controlled by sensory structures within the kidneys. Aldosterone is released from the adrenal gland to regulate the amount of sodium to the blood. It causes the tubules to become more permeable to salt. This causes a concentration gradient that allows water to be reabsorbed into the blood = increasing blood pressure and volume. |
