What does allochthonous mean?

The organic material coming from outside the system. Such as the leaves falling into the stream.

What does autochthonous mean?

The organic debris coming from inside the system (from other rivers and streams).

What is CPOM and FPOM?

CPOM is the coarse particulate organic matter. It is the allochthonous material (leaves and sticks) that the shredders break down. The small pieces left over are the fine particulate organic matter or FPOM.
