Ecology

!

What is an Ecosystem?

An ecosystem is a community full of interacting organisms

What is Biotic and Abiotic?

Living and Non-living organisms

What are the Biospheres?

Atmosphere, Lithosphere, Hydrosphere

What is biodiversity?

The variety in life in a particular habitat

What is a Biome? What are the Biomes in Canada

A big or major habitat. Tundra, Boreal Forest, Temperate Forest, Grassland

What is biodiversity? Significance to humans?

Boosts ecosystems productivity

Ecological realationships

Predation, Commensalism, Parasitism, Mutualism

What's a producer, consumer, decomposer, scavenger?

Producer: An organism that creates their own food; Plant.

Consumer: An organism that relies for food off other animals or plants.

Decomposer: An organism the decomposes dead material.

Scavenger: An animal that feeds off of dead animals.

What's the difference between a food chain and a food web?

A food web consists of many food chains where a food chain just follows one path of animals.

What's the Carbon cycle?

Factories release smoke which filters through the air affecting plants and animals; creates fossil fuels which transfer back to the factories.

What's cellular respiration and photosynthesis?

Cellular Respiration: the process that releases energy

Photosynthesis: the process where plants take energy from the sun and create oxygen

What percent of energy is transferred to the next consumer?

10%

Chemistry

!

What are the 4 postulates of the Particle Theory of Matter

1.All particles are in motion

2.All particles have a force of attraction

3.All matter is made of particles

4.All particles are pull substances

Astronomy

!

What is Astronomy

The study space and celestial objects in space

What is Cosmology

The study of the origin and history of space

What is the Big Bang

Starting with a small singularity, then inflating over the next 13.8 billion years to the cosmos that we know today

Solstice and Equinox

Solstice: Summer; June 21: Winter; December 21

Equinox: Spring; March 20: Fall; September 22

Earths Rotation and Revolution

Rotates every 27 days; Revolution every 365.24

Tides

Spring tides occur during the full moon and the new moon. During the moon's quarter phases the sun and moon work at right angles, causing the bulges to cancel each other. The result is a smaller difference between high and low tides and is known as a neap tide.

Lunar Phases

New moon, Waxing crescent, First quarter, Waxing gibbous, Full moon, Waning gibbous, Third quarter, Waning crescent

Lunar Eclipses

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its shadow

Aurora borealis/australis

The northern and southern lights

Retrograde motion

When planets are moving and it looks like they are stopping and going backwards then forward again
