What is the definition of diffusion

Explain it

Is the movement of particles form an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

- It is a process during which one substance spreads out through another. It occurs in liquids and gases.

- Diffusion occurs until all particles are evenly spread.

- Diffusion occurs faster in warmer temperatures as the particles are moving faster.

What is the definition of dissolving?

Is the process of adding a solute to a solvent and eventually having the solute mixing up with the liquid. This makes a solution. (Solutions can be with a solid an a liquid or two liquids.)

Filtration

Used for separating an soluble solid from liquid.

(Eg. A mixture of sand and water)

Decanting

Used for separating a mixture of substances with different densities. The less dense one is poured of the top. (Eg. Separating sand and water)

Note: Not as accurate as filtration.

Magnetic Properties

Used for separating a magnetic substance from a non-magnetic one. (Eg. Iron filings from sawdust.)

Evaporation

Used for separating a soluble solid solid from a liquid. (Eg. Copper sulfate crystals from copper sulfate solution.)

Note: Slow evaporation to leave crystals can be called "Crystallization"

Chromatography

Used to separate dissolved substances that have different colors.

Note: Some of the substances dissolve in the solvent better than others, so they travel further up the paper.

Simple Distillation

Used to separate a liquid from a solution. (Liquid evaporates from the solution, but is then cooled and condensed into a separate container.)

Fractional Distillation

Used to separate two or more liquids from each other. (Eg. Meths can be separated from a mixture with water by fractional distillation.)

Note: The two liquids most have different boiling points.

Centrifugation

Used to concentrate a solid suspended in a liquid would then decant off liquid. (Eg. Cells in blood)

What is the angle of incidence equal to...?

Angle of incidence is equal to angle of reflection.

Light Ray

Is a line or curve that is perpendicular to the light wave fronts.
