Like the rest of the industrialized nations, Japan wanted to extend its boarders to increase its access to raw materials. In 1940, Japan occupied French Indochina and joined the Axis powers Germany and Italy. These actions intensified Japan's conflict with the United States and Great Britain which reacted with an oil boycott. The Marshall Plan (European Recovery Program, ERP) was the primary plan of the United States for rebuilding and creating a stronger foundation for the allied countries of Europe.

By the time the plan had come to completion, the economy of every participant state, with the exception of Germany, had grown well past pre-war levels.

Questions arise whether this was an attempt to help the US economy by developing a European dependence on the US and to ensure that capitalism remained strong in Europe and to act as a deterrent to the spread of communism.
Explain the link between the Asnwan High Dam and the Suez Crisis of 1956, and its lasting impact on relations between the Middle East and the West.
The Suez canal, built by the British and Egyptians, was the ocean link with Europe and India, the Far East, Australia, and New Zealand.

Because the canal was strategically important to Britain it wanted to keep it open with the presense of its military. However, the Egyptians, were growing tired of their presence and Britain's support of Israel's creation. Egypt under Nasser wanted to be the center of the Arab world.

Egypt purchased a large military arsenal from Czechoslovakia increasing tensions. US, fearful of the ties Czech had with Russia, pulled out its support for the building of the Aswan Dam.

Egypt nationalized the canal. Now, the West had to contend with a Arab military force and its control of a vital resource.
