- Androgen is the male sex hormones, produced by the ovaries but if insulin is affected by pcos then the excess insulin can also increase the levels of androgen. Excess androgen prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg during the menstrual cycle. Excess androgen also cause excess hair growth (hirsutism) on areas such as face, arms, back, chest, abdomen
