FOOD INSECURITY

Being unable to access a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FOOD DEFICIT AND FOOD SECURITY

A country that has food security has physical & economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious foods while food deficit countries lack one or more of theseaspects.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE MILLENIUM GOALS

In 2000, governments around the world adopted eight Millennium development Goals, which aimed to promote human developmentand reduce poverty, hunger and disease (see text box, page 130).

MALTHUSIAN THEORY

Relating to Malthus or tohis theory that population tends to increase at a faster rate than its means ofsubsistence and that unless it is checked by moral restraint or disaster (asdisease, famine, or war) widespread poverty and degradation inevitably result.

GENETIC REVOLUTION

Genetically modifying food involves taking genes from certain cells of a plant or animal and inserting them into other cells to give desirable characteristics, such as increased resistance to pesticides.

GREEN REVOLUTION

The term green revolution has beenloosely applied to describe capital‑intensivefarming methods associatedwith theintroduction of new high-yielding varieties (HyV) of staple food crops in less developed countries.

FOOD SECURITY

Having access to a variety of food and having the food, and being able to afford the food.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MALNOURISHMENT AND UNDERNOURISHMENT

Malnourishmentis when a person is deficient in a nutrient (vitamin A, iron, iodine)


Undernourishmentis when a person does not have enough food.

ENTITLEMENT FAILURE

Entitlement failure is lack of access to food. Essentially, despite the growth in food production in the past 20 years, more people suffer from hunger. This has to do with the trade agreement,the excess food is transported to other countries rather than those that need it. Ordinary people cannot afford the food that exists due to low wages, poverty conditions etc.

WHAT IS THE FAO?

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is an agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger.

POSITIVE CHECKS

Positive checks, on the other hand, produced higher mortality rates as a result of famine, disease or war.

NEGATIVE CHECKS

Negative checks are preventive measures such as lower fertility rates brought about by later marriages. As a clergyman he had noted that marriage rates declined whenever food prices increased.
