Q angle:

-one line is from ...
the other is from ...

is it greater in males or females?
-the ASIS through the center of the patella
-the center of the patella to the tibial tuberosity

females
what are the average Q angles for males?

females?
13
18
... = bow legs (decreased Q angle)

... = knock knees (increased Q angle)
Genu varum

Genu valgum
extreme bowleggedness is also known as ...
rickets
Knee extensors:

Quadriceps femoris
(4)

3X stronger than flexors

Which muscle specifically will be the first one that will go bad and the last one to come back?
Rectus femoris
Vastus medialis
Vastus intermedius
Vastus lateralis

vastus medialis obliqus
Knee flexors:

Hamstrings
(3)

S.h biceps femoris

Pes anserine mm.
(3)
Semitendinosus
Semimembranosus
L.h. Biceps femoris

Sartorius
Gracilis
Semitendinosus
what is the lateral rotator of the knee?

what are the medial rotators of the knee?
biceps femoris

pes anserine mm. and semimembranosus
Popliteus is key:

Unlocks the extended knee

Knee laterally locks into extension because of contours of the joint surfaces. Before it can flex it must first be “unlocked”. That is the popliteus ... rotates the tibia on the femur prior to knee flexion. Or ... rotates the femur on the fixed tibia.
medial
laterally
Knee during walking:

How many extensions and flexions are there?

when is the first extension?

when is the first flexion?

when is the second extension?

when is the second flexion?
2 each

at heel strike

flatfoot (15 degrees of weight bearing flexion)

just prior to full weight bearing (midstance)

heel off
Heel strike (knee):

1st extension:
-what muscle group slows the knee and how do they contract?
-what muscle group extends the knee and how do they contract?
Hamstrings, eccentric
quadriceps, concentric
Flatfoot (knee):

slight flexion (10-15 degrees):
-what muscle group absorbs the shock to the knee and how do they contract?
quadriceps, eccentric
midstance (knee):

Extension:
-what muscle group controls the forward progression of the tibia and how does it contract?
triceps surae (gastrocs and soleus), eccentric
Heel off (knee):

extension:
-what muscle group is being used and how is it contracting?
none. it is momentum
Toe off (knee)

Flexion:
-what muscle group is being used and how is it contracting?
none. momentum
early swing:

Flexion:
-what muscle group is being used and how is it contracting?
none. momentum.
midswing:

decreasing flexion
-what muscle group is being used to control extension and how are they contracting?
hamstrings
eccentric
Late swing:

to extension:
-what muscle group is being used to control extension and how is it contracting?
hamstrings
eccentric
