Clemmer and Sykes: Deprivation
Believe inmates face social, psychological, andphysical pressures. Such as: Loss of freedom, dignity, security, etc..
Irwin and Cressy: Importation
Inmates don't just adapt but import values to institution. They invent thier own culture based upon all these losses.
Why does it matter how the inmates and gaurds go about life in prison?
Because what we do inside is important we could create an enviornment to make the inmates turn out worse then when they came in. But we also cannot make it luxurious because they are supposed to be being punished. We need to remember that time is the main punishment nothing more.
Prison Subcultures: 5 Elements of prison code
Don't interfere with interests of other inmates-don't rat on others, Play it cool-do your own time, Don't whine-be a man, Don't exploit inmates-don't break your word, Don't be a sucker-don't trust gaurds or staff. These are no longer the norm gangs have replaced these with new codes.
Simulated Prison:
Experiment done by Standford University students; Created a jail and assigned students to either be gaurds or inmates; The experiment was supposed to last for 2 weeks but got carried away so shut down; Gaurds were taunting and inmates were trying to escape some even went crazy. What they received out of this is to rethink our prison system because we're going to create abusive confrontational gaurds and worse inmates.

Inmates could now challenge conditions of their confinements, Supreme Court said times were changing and allowed prisoners to writ habeous corpuse. Inamtes rarely win cases but it may creat compromise.
Pell v. Procunier
1st amendment rights not inconsistent; Balancing Test is guided by 2 ideas: 1) is that the role of the prison and experts is the saftey within the institutions and safety of society, 2) is the rights of the inmates, just because they are incarcerated doesn't mean you don't have rights.
Problems Facing Prisons:
Crowding-privatizing prisons has been successful but we do not have the resources to so this everywhere, gangs-loosing control over institutions, older offenders-medical expenses, mental illness among inmates...
