Describe the host skeleton and how pathogens can take advantage |
Host cells have cytoskeletons that are responsible for maintaining cell shape and movement. Pathogens can take advantage of the host cytoskeleton for entry. |
|
What are invasins? |
Invasins are surface proteins produced by bacteria that rearrange actin filaments of the cytoskeleton. These help penetrate the host cell cytoskeleton. Cause membrane ruffling: disrupts cytoskeleton and microbe can sink in and be engulfed on purpose. Ex. Salmonella and e.coli |
|
What are the 4 ways that bacterial pathogens damage host cells? |
1. Using the hosts nutrients 2. Causing direct damage to local tissues 3. Producing toxins that damage sites farther away 4. Inducing hypersensitivity reactions |
