Describe the host skeleton and how pathogens can take advantage

Host cells have cytoskeletons that are responsible for maintaining cell shape and movement. Pathogens can take advantage of the host cytoskeleton for entry.

What are invasins?

Invasins are surface proteins produced by bacteria that rearrange actin filaments of the cytoskeleton. These help penetrate the host cell cytoskeleton.

Cause membrane ruffling: disrupts cytoskeleton and microbe can sink in and be engulfed on purpose.

Ex. Salmonella and e.coli

What are the 4 ways that bacterial pathogens damage host cells?

1. Using the hosts nutrients

2. Causing direct damage to local tissues

3. Producing toxins that damage sites farther away

4. Inducing hypersensitivity reactions
