What is an outbreak?

An outbreak is an occurrence of a disease in a limited area.

What's the difference between endemic, epidemic and pandemic?

Endemic- infectious disease that exhibits a relatively steady frequency over a long time period in a particular geographic area.


Epidemic- the number of cases is more than expected for that population during any time period. (Larger scale than outbreak)


Pandemic- epidemic that spreads across continents.

Whats the difference between emerging infectious diseases and reemerging infectious diseases?

Emerging infectious diseases are those that are new or changing, showing an increase in occurence. It can be caused by a virus, bacterium, fungus, protozoan, or helminth (worm).


Ex: Ebola virus, e.coli



Re-emerging infectious diseases are those that were prevalent in the past, decreased in occurrence, but are recently increasing again. (Perhaps due to drug resistance and increased exposure)


Ex. Tuberculosis
