Each division of the Semi Circular Canals, Vestibule and Cochlea have both a _____ labyrinth and a ______ labyrinth
Osseous and Membranous
____ is the outer tube, while _____ is the inner tube
Osseous outside; Membranous inside
What type of fluid fills the membranous tube/labyrinth?
Endolympth
What type of fluid fills the bony tube/labyrinth?
Perilymph
Inner ear is divided into 2 cavity systems...
1) Organs of equilibrium
2) Organ of hearing
Inner ear contains 2 labyrinth systems...
Osseous-exavations
Membranous-sacs and ducts
What does the Bony labyrinth consist of?
System of canals and cavities within the dense (petrous) portion of the temporal bone
When does inner ear attain full size?
By middle of fetal life
What is the otic capsule?
The embryonic cartilage capsule that surrounds the inner ear mechanism and develops into bony tissue.
what components of inner ear have to do with balance?
semi circular canals and vestibule
what components of inner ear have to do with hearing?
cochlea
what makes the inner ear special?
Contains the neural sensors and ends that initiate the neural activity necessary to hear.
name the 3 divisions of the inner ear
vestibule, semicircular canals, and cochlea
Cochlea is ______ in the auditory mechanism
Anterior
Vestibule is located where?
Between Cochlea and SCC
The space that is filled with perilymph is often referred to as the ______
perilympathic, perilymphic space
If we examine the surface of the bony labyrinth we would see that it is covered with ________
fibrous membrane
What does the perilymphatic epithelium (membrane) secrete ?
that secretes a clear serous fluid called perilympth
What nerve extends off of the back of the cochlea?
8th nerve; vestibulocochlear
Oval window fits into where in the inner ear?
Center part of the inner ear labyrinth or boney vestibule
Some fun...What part of the ear does Dr. Laws enjoy looking at?
semi circular canals (ha,ha)
Name the semi circular canals
Superior, Posterior, Lateral
Which of the semicircular canals share a common crus
Superior and Posterior
How many openings are their into the vestibule from the SCC?
5
Describe the Osseous vestibule
Forms central portion of bony labyrinth and is continuous with the semicircular canals and with the cochlea; oval/ovoid in shape, 5 mm anterior-posterior; 3 mm deep; lateral wall (aka tympanic wall) contains oval window; medial wall contains small perforations and the 3 recessess
What is the vestibular crest?
Predominance that projects toward you. Seperates pyramid of vestibular recess superiorly from the elliptical and spherical recesses below
What does the elliptical recess eventually house?
Utricle
What does the spherical recess eventually house?
Saccule
Describe the Osseous semi circular canals
Comprise the posterior area of the bony labyrinth; open to vestuble; each canal about 2/3 of a circle; contains a membranous duct which occupies 1/4 of the osseous duct.
What is an ampulla
Dilation at the point where the canal joins the vestibule. Each semi cc has one.
Describe the lateral canal
sits at a 30 degree angle (horizontal) toward top of head; apullary anterior end into upper vestibule; posterior end into lower vestibule
Describe the superior canal.
Anterior lateral end ampulated and joins upper vestibule; posterior medial end fuses with superior lib of the posterior canal to form the crus commune
Describe the posterior canal
Upper limb fuses with the superior canal to form the crus commune; lower ampulated limb opens into the lower vestibule
Describe the medial wall of the vestibule
small perforations, orifice of vestibular aqueduct which extends to the posterior surface of the temporal bone; vestibular crest with the 3 recesses
Describe the osseous and membranous labyrinth from the outside to the inside....
Bone, perilympth (perilymphic space), membrane, endolympth
What is the ductus endolymphaticus
extension of the membranous labyrinth which terminates as a cul de sac within the layers of the dura mater in the cranial cavity
What joins to form a common canal or crus?
The superior and posterior semicircular canals for a common canal which opens into the vestibule on the upper and medial wall
How do the semicircular canals lie?
3 planes, perpendicular to one another, any two form nearly a right angle
