What are the 6 steps in the life cycle of animal viruses? |
1. Attachment (or absorption) 2. Entry 3. Uncoating 4. Biosythesis of DNA and proteins 5. Maturation (assembly of virions) 6. Release from the host cell |
|
Describe attachment, and give example |
Envelope spikes or capsid spikes bind to receptors. Ex. Influenza virus |
|
2nd step- entry. What are the 3 mechanisms for viruses to enter the host cell? (After attachment) |
1. Membrane fusion- fushion of the envelope and cell membrane of the host. 2. Receptor-mediated endocytosis- the host cell engulfs virus. The virus (virion) is now in a vesicle. 3. Direct penetration- directly penetrate the cell membrane to inject its viral genome into the host. Ex. Bacteriophage. |
