What are the 6 steps in the life cycle of animal viruses?

1. Attachment (or absorption)

2. Entry

3. Uncoating

4. Biosythesis of DNA and proteins

5. Maturation (assembly of virions)

6. Release from the host cell

Describe attachment, and give example

Envelope spikes or capsid spikes bind to receptors. Ex. Influenza virus

2nd step- entry.

What are the 3 mechanisms for viruses to enter the host cell? (After attachment)

1. Membrane fusion- fushion of the envelope and cell membrane of the host.

2. Receptor-mediated endocytosis- the host cell engulfs virus. The virus (virion) is now in a vesicle.

3. Direct penetration- directly penetrate the cell membrane to inject its viral genome into the host. Ex. Bacteriophage.
