Age-specific mortality rate

Total number of deaths from all causes among individuals in a specific age category

Attack Rate

Number of new cases that develop per the number in a healthy population at risk at the start of the period.

Usually reserved for disease outbreaks (type of CI)

Cause-specific mortality

Number of deaths from a specific cause per 100,000 per year

Crude Mortality

Total number of deaths from all causes per 100,000 population per year

Infant mortality rate

Number of deaths of infants less than one year of age per 1000 livebirths per year

Determinants

Risk factors that can lead to or protect against disease.

Can be:

- molecular/genetic

- individual

- interpersonal

- physical

- community

- social/cultural/economic

- structural

levels

Rate Difference

Difference between two measures of disease frequency, on which absolute comparison is based

Epidemiology

The study of the distribution and determinants of the frequency of health-related states/events in specified populations, and the application of this study to the control of health problems

Morbidity Rate

Number of existing or new cases of a particular disease or condition per 100 population

Person-time

- Accrued only among candidates for the disease.

- Person contributes time to the denominator of incidence rate only until he or she is diagnosed with the disease.

- Only accrued when person is being followed

Type of population (dynamic/open)

Membership is based on a condition and is transitory

Type of population (fixed)

Membership is based on an event and is permanent

Years of Potential life lost

Number of years that an individual was expected to live beyond his or her death

Age-standardized / age-adjusted rates

Method in which rates in each state are summarized in a single number that adjusts for the age differences between the populations

Uses some standard weight, which should be provided to us (usually the age weights of both populations in question combined)
