Why could Jesus tell the Samaritan woman he was the Messiah, but not the Jews?
There was a different expectations of a Messiah for the Jews and the Samaritans. The Samaritans were expecting a prophet like Moses since they only followed the Pentateuch, and the Jews were expecting a warrior king and political figure. Jesus could tell the Samaritan Woman that he was the messiah because all that she expects if he is the Messiah is prophecy and words.
Compare Jesus' ministry to Samaritans with that found to non-Jews in Matthew.
John says that Jesus has a two-day ministry among the Samaritans. In Matthew Jesus says that he was sent ONLY to the Jews, but in John Jesus says, it’s time to minister to the Samaritans. The liberal scholars say that this is so different, therefore Matthew must be true and John must be invented. Jesus heals the Canaanite woman's daughter after she gives Him a good answer, and Jesus also ministers to the Roman Centurion. Jesus’ ministry to Non-Jews in Matthew is similar to the two-day ministry that Jesus has to the Samaritans in John. Therefore, John did not invent a portion of his gospel.
What is symbolized by the healings in John 4-5?
John wants to tell us that those of Galilee only believe when they see signs, v. 48, in contrast with the Samaritans, who believed without signs when they heard the word of the woman
Explain the significance that John begins with "in the beginning."
The Logos or Word meaning Jesus was not created by God as the first creature. The Logos was always with God. This shows us that sisnce Jesus wasn't created by God, Jesus and God are one in the same. This also shows us that God had always intended to reveal himself to humanity in the form of Jesus.
Explain the different meanings of "grace ____ grace" in 1:16.
"one blessing after another" the first meaning of this is
1) "Grace instead of Grace": grace has come and replaced the grace of the old system.
the second meaning of this is
"Grace on Top of Grace": God has added more grace on top of the old grace. This is overflowing grace. My "cup runneth over"
