Sedatives vs Hypnotics
- Sedatives induce calmness, reduce anxiety

- Hypnotics induce sleep

Benzodiazepines

- Depress CNS activity


- Used for anxiety disorders, seizure disorders, insomnia, muscle spasms, ETOH w/d, induction of aneshesia.


- Oral or IV administration


- Complications: Lightheadedness, drowsiness, paradoxical response (insomnia, anxiety, rage), nausea, respiratory depression, cardiac arrest (acute toxicity)


- Interaction: Azole antifungals, verapamil, diltiazem, protease inhibitors, macrotide antibiotics, grapefruit juice, CNS depressants (alcohol, opiods), olanzapine, rifampin.
